When I read what the assignment for this week was, I was both excited and overwhelmed. I was going to learn something using only YouTube and online help forums. There were so many things that I wanted to learn that it was hard for me to narrow down my choices. My goal was to pick something that I could do to relax but also allowed me to be creative. As a science teacher there are ways that I get to be creative, but not all of them allow me to be artistically creative. I thought about learning some basic painting skills, however after researching some videos online, I found that they made me more anxious and nervous-the opposite of relaxed! I finally settled on trying to learn basic calligraphy. Calligraphy seemed like the perfect blend of artistic creativity while being a relaxing hobby and something that could be potentially useful in the future!
My first step was to do a basic YouTube search for learning calligraphy. I realized right away that there was more than just one type of calligraphy and that I would need to choose! To make my choice I watched a few different videos looking for a style that caught my eye. I decided to focus on a more modern calligraphy style. I thought this would be something I would be more likely to use rather than a traditional calligraphy. To start, I plan on focusing on the technique of holding the pen and practicing using the pen with this video. From everything I had seen online, how you hold the pen makes a huge difference in your writing. Once I have practiced my penmanship, I plan to try working on flourishes using this video.
I also found a blog that walks through beginner calligraphy. I loved the way the posts were separated to give you time to learn, and I am a visual learner so having the directions written out seemed extremely helpful for me. I will be using this blog in conjunction with the videos to help me practice and perfect my writing!
At the end of this Networked Learning Project I would love to be able to create a few Thank You cards for my family. In the next few days I will be getting my supplies and getting started with my practice! Stay tuned for updates!
